Lyceum Course - Internet Genealogy - Eureka
- A Personal Experience Researching the World Wide Web
- Starting point -
- Information from a correspondent ten years ago.
- To wit - Wife of Elias Holbrook Jr., Sally Reed was a daughter
of Shubael Reed and Lydia Pearce
- Decided to see if Internet could help extend this further.
- Proceeded thusly -
- Went to
Google - Advanced Search
- Entered - "Lydia" and "Pearce" and phrase "Shubael Reed"
- Eureka! Found a book of genealogy by Chaffee from 1909 which had been scanned.
NB. List presented by Google changes with time.
- Click to see an image of the title
Chafee - Frontispiece Available in class only.
-
Page 568 is the page of interest. Image available in class only.
- Low and behold. Lydia Pearce was not married to Shubael Reed but
to his son Samuel.
- Proceeded to research and document the family.
- Preparing for this Lyceum Class
- Went through the same procedure as above.
- Accidently clicked on another Google link, a DAR publication.
- It was for a different book, with a different husband listed
for Lydia, though she was still indicated to be a daughter-in-law of Shubael.
- Thought "Oh No!"
- Exercise for student -
- Enter same info as above into Google Advanced Search form (above)
and click the "Daughters of the American Revolution magazine - Google Books"
link.
- Revisited prior research and documentation for Samuel Reed
- Lessons Learned
- Sometimes what seems like a stab in the dark is successful!
- There is lots of genealogical material now available on the Internet!
- Not all the information on the Internet can be trusted to be correct!
- Repeated searches using Google, even with same form data, change over time.
