- Spelling - A Common Bug-a-Boo in Census Searching
- This applies just to the Internet. Published Indices found at libraries have a different set of problems. Eg. Age of head of household not usually given.
- Query - On my maternal side, there is the Dennett family.
My sister and I are trying to find their European origins, and when &
how they immigrated to the US. The last relative, we have been able to
find is - Jacob Millard Dennett, b 1858 in Castene, Maine, d 1926, Castene
Maine. His wife was Nora June Bakeman, b 1862, Brooksville Maine. They were
married 12 Sept 1885, Castene, Maine
- The Census Search
- If you have access to Heritage Quest census images continue, or if uncertain Directions to Census Images
- Otherwise at your library use Ancestry.com (or at home if you have a subscription)
- At HQ use "Advanced Search"
- Jacob Dennett should be in the 1880 census age 22 in Maine.
- No such Jacob Dennett
- Relax the search. Dennett in Maine in 1880
- Low and Behold - Here is J. Millard Dennett - He's in Castine, Hancock County
Can't assume someone always uses the same name
- Now Let's follow our own advice, look for Jacob Dennett in Hancock County (Castine
Township) in the 1920 Census - he should now be 62.
- Can't find.
- Relax the search - any Jacob in Hancock County, Maine
- Looking through list, there is a Jacob Dermitt but he is too young
- Just below is Jacob Millard Dermitt !!!
Looking at actual record shows wife June. So we have the right family.
