Lyceum Course - Introduction to Genealogical Research - Linville Example
Abraham Linville Family Research
- Interested in this family, as I've previously researched a couple
Samuel Franklin Bigham m. Nancy A. Linville. Interested in finding her
parents.
- First Source - "The Linville Family in America", Alice Eichholz, McDowell Publications, Hartford,
Kentucky, 1977, pages 112-113.
- Lists Nancy Linville married Frank Bigham as daughter of
Abraham Linville and Nancy Trapp
- Lets try to verify the children of this couple.
- "Eichholz" lists daughter of Abraham Linville and Nancy Trapp - Jeminia Linville m. 1/14/1846 Josiah Hendricks
- Sanity Check - Abraham and Nancy Married March 24, 1824 in Lillard County, Missouri. So this Jeminia is of right age to be a daughter.
Note: A copy of this marriage record should be at Lafayette County MO Courthouse - office of Registrar. Why Lafayette instead of Lillard?
- A check of the county boundries using
Atlas of Historical County Boundaries
- Records are most often at the courthouse where they were created,
even if that courthouse is now in a new smaller county.
- Try to Verify this Research
- Google Search - PHRASE "Josiah Hendricks" AND ANY OF ( MO Missouri Platte Buchanan )
- Location based on other Linville research over the years, and 1982 Revision of Eichholz.
- 6h Hit - a researcher lists marriage date.
Family: Josiah Hendricks/Jemimia Linville (F3065)
- Married Jan 14, 1846. Seems to confirm "Eichholz".
- BUT! Since it is without citation, it could have come from
"Eichholz" just as well as an independent source.
- 1850 Census - Find Josiah Hendrick/s and Jemimah
- Found - Series: M432 Roll: 393 Page: 107 1850 > MISSOURI > BUCHANAN > BLOOMINGTON TWP
Workshop Files - Choose Abraham Linville Link
- Abstract - Josiah Hendrick [29] Mary [20] Mary Jane [2]
- BUT! The apparent wife is not Jeminia as we expect (per "Eicholz")
- Two explainations.
- Jeminia did not mary Josiah Hendrick
- This is Jeminia, but going by a different name.
- So we are still looking for confirmation.
- 1860 Census - Found Jemima C. Hendrick [30] and daughter Laura [13] in David J. Thorp household
Workshop Files - Choose Abraham Linville Link
- Didn't find a listing for Josiah Hendrick/s
- So was Jemina/Jemima married to a different Hendrick/s than Josiah?
- Record does suggest this Sarah might be older sister of Jeminia per "Eichholz"
- However, "Eichholz" has a different husband for Sarah, a Thompson Blair
- And if this Jemima was married to Josiah Hendricks in 1850, is he deceased, or are they divorced, or has Josiah moved away with Mary and daughter?
- Google Search - PHRASE "Josiah Hendrick" AND ANY OF ( MO Missouri Platte Buchanan )
Note: Not quite the same as previous Google, (Hendrick vs Hendricks)
- Second entry catches eye as know DeKalb is in Buchanan County
- Letter to Josiah Hendrick from Robert James Hendrick
- A careful reading turns up phrase "Tell Laura her uncle"
- And note, Josiah in 1852 is living in Buchanan County, same place as 1850 census places
a Josiah Hendrick.
- So it is quite likely that this Josiah Hendrick is/was husband of (Mary/Jemima) and father of (Mary Jane/Laura}.
- What other possibilities remain? There were two Laura Hendrick/s,
one a daughter of Josiah and Mary, the other a daughter of Jemima (possibly Linville) and an unknown Hendrick/s.
- Third entry has image of letter and envelope!
1852: Robert James Hendrick to Josiah Hendrick
- A statement in conjunction with this letter is made that Josiah married Jemima Linville daughter of Abraham and Nancy.
However, since this fact was not not mentioned in letter, then it must be due to to research for which no citation is given. This adds
nothing to our attempt to prove Jemima Linville married a _______ Hendrick/s.
-
- What about the supposed sister of Jemimah Linville named Sarah?
- Background. The interest in Jemimah and Sarah is because
the 1850 Federal Census for Abraham and Nancy does not name them.
- If they were daughters, they were already not living with
the family, presumeably married.
- But since we found a Jemiman and a Sarah in the David Thorp
household in 1860. Let's look for David Thorp in the census.
- Found - "Series: M432 Roll: 401 Page: 98 1850 1850 > MISSOURI > HOLT > 38-DIST
Workshop Files - Choose Abraham Linville Link
- So a Sarah was married to a David Thorp by 1850, but question remains if the Sarah Linville we are looking for was married to Thompson Blair or David Thorp?
- Google - Sarah AND PHRASE (Thompson Blair) AND ANY OF ( MO Missouri Platte Buchanan )
Query mentions Sarah and Thompson Blair Researcher thinks this Sarah from a different Linville than Abraham.
- Find-A-Grave knows Sarah and Thompson Blair.
Search Key" Thompson Blair born before 1840 in the United States
Thompson Milton Blair
- A close reading shows Thompson Blair and Sarah Linville were married in Buchanan County, Missouri
- So there are at least two women named Sarah Linville connected to Buchanan County
- Follow one married to David Thorp. Because Jemima Hendricks in their household in 1860, and we suspect this is the one related closely to Abraham Linville.
- Google - PHRASE (David Thorp) AND ANY OF ( MO Missouri Platte Buchanan )
- One researcher says died in Platte County, Missouri
- Next Google hit - refers to a History of Platte County by Paxton

- The Coriolanus mentioned in Paxton is in the 1860 Census for the
David Thorp household.
- Further exploration of the "Annals" fails to find any connection between Abraham Linville and Sarah E. Linville Thorp
